May Health Days to Note

We highlight the causes that Canadians are spreading awareness of, nationally, that relate to mental health and mental wellness.

During the month of May, discussions around mental health and brain health are plentiful across the country. Messaging provided directly from the linked website.

“The whole idea of compassion is based on a keen awareness of the interdependence of all these living beings, which are all part of one another, and all involved in one another.” - Thomas Merton

Finally, and most importantly, bring empathy alive with the people in your life. Be there, listen completely, and see the world through their eyes. It’s how to really help. #GetReal.

May 7th is about building caring connections between young people and the caring adults in their lives. We know having caring, connected conversations can have a big impact on the mental health of children and youth.

May is Brain Tumour Awareness Month in Canada. Help us #TurnMayGrey in 2022 to #EndBrainTumours.

Join us to show people affected by MS that they aren’t alone and connect with communities across the country united in working towards a world free of MS.

World MS Day (May 30)

We are challenging social barriers that leave people affected by MS feeling lonely and socially isolated. Together, we advocate for better services, celebrate support networks and champion self-care. Change the future, find your #MSConnections.

The theme this year is #WeAnswerTheCall and was developed by CNA to showcase the many roles that nurses play in a patient’s health-care journey. The pandemic brought to light the courage and commitment that nurses work under every day and showed the important role that nurses play in the community.

International Nurses Day (May 12) Florence Nightingale's birthday.

The CIND illnesses include Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (ME), Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS), Fibromyalgia (FM), Gulf War Syndrome (GWS) and Multiple Chemical Sensitivity (MCS).

Our commitment to end sexual violence brings together community organizations and 10 government ministries to deliver a coordinated, province-wide response to sexual violence in Alberta. It was developed through extensive consultation with frontline providers, advocates and survivors.

While we still have a long way to go to realize a world without barriers for people of all abilities, we hope you will join in the celebration of how far we’ve come as an inclusive country, and continue to help create a world for #EveryoneEverywhere!

You might want to participate in the online conversation, raise awareness in your community, or learn how to better support a loved one. There are many ways to support the mental health and mental wellness of those around you during the health days of May!

Through arts and culture projects, we support healthy brain development and promote mental health literacy. We innovate the mental health conversation with evidence-backed processes developed through our research, blend it with art, and then weave it into a narrative for fun and playful learning.

In the spirit of reconciliation and truth, we are grateful to ground our work and learning in Moh’kinsstis (Calgary). We acknowledge the Treaty 7 region of Southern Alberta, Canada as home of the Blackfoot Confederacy (Siksika, Kainai, Piikani), the Tsuut’ina, the Iyarhe Nakoda Nations, and the Otipemisiwak Métis Government, Districts 5 & 6. Thank you for your ongoing stewardship of this land, for helping us to witness the trauma of your experience, and for sharing the wisdom of the Medicine Wheel with us.
