Beating the Holiday Blahs

Updated: Feb 10

With a much different holiday season approaching, and with so many of us struggling to manage our mental health with all the social and economic stress brought on by the pandemic, it’s more important than ever to be in touch with ourselves, our loved ones, and any services we may need to lean on to keep us moving forward.

As Dr. Rumeet Billan, of the CMHA put it in her interview with Global news, “When we think about connection, at the core of that, is feelings of belonging. How do we create that community of belonging and feeling of belonging with those that we love and care about?”

We’ve put together a few resources to help you manage your mental health better this holiday season:

COVID-19 and the holidays: How to help feelings of loneliness and stress this holiday season from Yahoo Canada.

Holiday Health Tips For COVID-19 Fatigue from Huffington Post Canada through Associate Editor, Al Donato.

Mental Health Matters: Dealing with holiday grief submitted by Angele D’Alessio, Mental Health Promoter, Canadian Mental Health Association, Champlain East.

We have the tools today to see faces in far off places, let’s not lose sight that we can still connect this holiday season and beat the holiday blahs. We’re all in this together.

on a blurred background is a quote from researcher Brené Brown about the courage to be authentic, vulnerable, and imperfect.

Through arts and culture projects, we support healthy brain development and promote mental health literacy. We innovate the mental health conversation with evidence-backed processes developed through our research, blend it with art, and then weave it into a narrative for fun and playful learning.

In the spirit of reconciliation and truth, we are grateful to ground our work and learning in Moh’kinsstis (Calgary). We acknowledge the Treaty 7 region of Southern Alberta, Canada as home of the Blackfoot Confederacy (Siksika, Kainai, Piikani), the Tsuut’ina, the Iyarhe Nakoda Nations, and the Otipemisiwak Métis Government, Districts 5 & 6. Thank you for your ongoing stewardship of this land, for helping us to witness the trauma of your experience, and for sharing the wisdom of the Medicine Wheel with us.
